Earthing Systems
What is chemical earthing and how does it work?
Chemical earthing is a modern, maintenance-friendly earthing method that uses a hollow electrode filled with a hygroscopic backfill compound. The compound continuously absorbs moisture from the surrounding soil, lowers the electrode-to-soil contact resistance, and maintains stable low earth resistance even in dry or rocky terrain. Unlike conventional pipe or plate earthing, chemical earthing electrodes do not corrode rapidly and deliver consistent performance for 15–25 years with minimal maintenance. This makes chemical earthing the preferred choice for industrial plants, substations, and telecom sites across India.
What is a copper bonded earthing electrode?
A copper bonded earthing electrode is a steel-core rod coated with a molecularly bonded layer of pure copper, typically 250 microns thick. The steel core provides mechanical strength for deep driving into soil, while the copper exterior delivers excellent electrical conductivity and long-term corrosion resistance. Copper bonded electrodes meet UL 467 and IEC 62561 standards and are widely used in substations, industrial plants, data centres, and telecom infrastructure.
What is the difference between GI and copper earthing electrodes?
The primary differences are corrosion resistance, conductivity, and service life:
- GI (Galvanised Iron) electrodes are cost-effective and suitable for moderate-risk applications in dry or neutral soils, but are susceptible to corrosion in moist, acidic, or chemically aggressive environments. Typical service life is 8–15 years depending on soil conditions.
- Pure copper and copper bonded electrodes offer superior electrical conductivity, far greater corrosion resistance, and service lives of 20–40 years. They are the preferred choice for critical applications such as substations, data centres, hospitals, and coastal or chemically aggressive soil environments.
For most industrial and infrastructure projects, copper bonded or pure copper electrodes deliver a better total cost of ownership despite higher initial cost.
Which earthing system is best for industrial plants?
For industrial plants, we typically recommend a chemical earthing system using copper bonded electrodes with a high-performance backfill compound. This combination provides low and stable earth resistance, resists corrosion in industrial environments, and greatly reduces maintenance frequency. For high fault-current applications or large switchyard earthing grids, we design ring earthing systems using copper conductor grids interconnected with multiple chemical earthing pits, conforming to IS 3043 and IEC 62305.
What is backfill compound and why is it important?
Backfill compound (also called earthing compound or conductive filler) is a hygroscopic mixture packed around an earthing electrode to reduce soil resistivity and improve electrical contact between the electrode and the surrounding earth. A good backfill compound significantly lowers earth resistance, especially in high-resistivity soil types such as rocky, sandy, or laterite terrain common in many parts of India. Konnark's backfill compound is non-toxic, environmentally safe, and retains moisture effectively to maintain consistent low resistance across seasonal variations.
How do I select the right earthing electrode for my project?
Electrode selection depends on several key factors:
- Soil resistivity — measured via a Wenner four-pin test
- Required earth resistance value — typically ≤1 Ω for substations, ≤5 Ω for industrial equipment, ≤10 Ω for general installations
- Fault current magnitude — determines conductor cross-section
- Soil chemistry — acidic, saline, or industrial soils require copper-based electrodes
- Available depth — rocky sites may need horizontal counterpoise grids
Our technical team provides free design assistance. Share your soil resistivity data and project scope and we will recommend the optimal electrode type, size, and earthing configuration.
How long do earthing systems typically last?
Service life depends on electrode material and soil conditions. GI electrodes typically last 8–15 years. Copper bonded electrodes generally last 20–30 years. Pure copper electrodes and chemical earthing systems with quality backfill compound can deliver reliable performance for 25–40 years with periodic resistance testing and occasional backfill top-up. We recommend annual earth resistance testing per IS 3043 to ensure continued system integrity.
Which earthing solution is recommended for solar power plants?
Solar power plants require a reliable, low-maintenance earthing grid because they operate in open-field environments with wide soil resistivity variation. We recommend copper bonded chemical earthing electrodes combined with a horizontal copper conductor ring grid interconnecting all module mounting structures, inverter stations, and transformer earthing points. This approach conforms to IEC 62305 and CEA regulations and ensures personnel safety and equipment protection for the 25-year life of the solar asset.
Which earthing solution is suitable for telecom towers?
Telecom towers demand ultra-low earth resistance, typically ≤5 Ω or better, to protect sensitive electronic equipment and ensure uninterrupted network operation. We supply chemical earthing systems with copper bonded electrodes that achieve these values even in challenging soil conditions. Our solutions are installed at telecom tower sites across India by major operators and meet TRAI and DOT infrastructure guidelines.
Which earthing products are used in electrical substations?
Substation earthing systems must safely dissipate large fault currents and protect personnel from step and touch potentials. For substations, Konnark supplies:
- Copper bonded earth rods for deep-driven grid electrodes
- Pure copper strip and conductor for horizontal grid construction
- Chemical earthing pits at grid nodes
- Backfill compound for consistent low resistance
- Earthing accessories including clamps, connectors, and inspection chambers
What earthing is recommended for hospitals and data centres?
Hospitals and data centres are safety-critical facilities requiring clean, low-noise earth connections to protect life-critical and sensitive electronic equipment. We recommend an isolated earth system using pure copper or copper bonded electrodes with dedicated earthing pits for IT and medical equipment, separately maintained from structural and lightning earth networks. Earth resistance values of ≤1 Ω are typically specified for these facilities.
What earth resistance testing is recommended and how often?
IS 3043 recommends earth resistance be measured using the Fall-of-Potential (three-terminal) method at installation and thereafter at regular intervals. For industrial and critical installations, annual testing is recommended. For general commercial buildings, testing every two to three years is typical. Testing should be performed during the dry season when soil resistivity is highest to verify the system meets its design resistance value under worst-case conditions.
What is earthing and why is it important?
Earthing (or grounding) is the process of providing a low-resistance electrical path between an installation and the earth. A correctly designed earthing system protects personnel from electric shock, limits equipment damage during fault conditions, ensures proper operation of protective relays and circuit breakers, and provides a stable reference voltage for the electrical network. It is mandatory for all electrical installations under the Indian Electricity Rules and IS 3043.
What is IS 3043 and does it apply to my project?
IS 3043 is the Bureau of Indian Standards code of practice for earthing. It specifies electrode types, installation methods, required earth resistance values, testing procedures, and maintenance requirements for electrical earthing systems in India. It applies to all AC electrical installations — residential, commercial, and industrial. Compliance with IS 3043 is referenced in tenders, statutory approvals, and insurance requirements for electrical infrastructure across India.
What is maintenance-free earthing?
Maintenance-free earthing refers to chemical earthing systems that use a self-sustaining hygroscopic backfill compound around the electrode. The compound continuously absorbs atmospheric moisture, maintains low soil resistivity around the electrode, and does not require the periodic water-pouring that conventional GI pipe earthing needs. This significantly reduces operational maintenance requirements and is the preferred earthing method for industrial plants, substations, telecom towers, and solar power projects.
What earthing is recommended for residential buildings?
For residential buildings, a GI or copper bonded chemical earthing electrode with backfill compound is the standard recommendation. Earth resistance should not exceed 5 Ω for household installations per IS 3043. Chemical earthing is preferred over conventional pipe or plate earthing for its longer service life and minimal maintenance. For high-rise residential buildings, a ring earthing arrangement with multiple electrode pits is typically designed for better fault current distribution.

Lightning Protection
Why is lightning protection important for buildings and infrastructure?
A direct lightning strike delivers currents of 20,000–300,000 amperes in microseconds. Without a properly designed lightning protection system (LPS), this energy can cause catastrophic structural damage, electrical fires, loss of life, and destruction of expensive equipment. India experiences among the highest lightning incidence globally, with over 2,000 lightning-related fatalities recorded annually. A well-designed LPS safely intercepts, conducts, and dissipates lightning energy to earth, protecting both the structure and its occupants.
What is an ESE Lightning Arrester and how does it differ from a conventional air terminal?
An ESE (Early Streamer Emission) Lightning Arrester is an active air terminal that generates an upward leader streamer ahead of a natural lightning discharge, enabling it to intercept the strike and extend the protected radius beyond that of a conventional Franklin rod of the same height. Key differences:
- Conventional air terminal — passive Franklin rod, protection radius determined purely by rolling-sphere method per IEC 62305, limited to fixed geometric zone.
- ESE arrester — active device with advance time (ΔT), larger protection radius per NFC 17-102, often allowing a single unit to protect large structures where multiple conventional terminals would otherwise be needed.
ESE arresters are particularly cost-effective for large industrial sheds, warehouses, telecom towers, and stadium structures.
What is a conventional lightning protection system?
A conventional lightning protection system consists of three key components designed per IEC 62305 and IS 2309:
- Air termination network — Franklin rods, conductor mesh, or catenary wires installed at roof level to intercept the strike
- Down conductors — copper or aluminium conductors that safely carry the lightning current from roof to ground
- Earth termination network — earthing pits or ring electrodes that dissipate the energy harmlessly into the ground
Which industries and structures need lightning protection systems?
Any structure that is taller than its surroundings, houses valuable equipment, or presents life-safety risk should have a formal lightning protection system. High-priority applications include petrochemical and oil & gas storage, power substations and transmission towers, telecom masts, hospital buildings, data centres, large industrial sheds, educational campuses, stadiums, and solar power plants. Many state and national building codes now mandate LPS for buildings above a defined height or occupancy classification.
Do you supply lightning protection systems as complete solutions?
Yes. Konnark supplies complete lightning protection packages including ESE arresters, conventional air terminals, down conductors, copper and aluminium conductor tapes, test clamps, surge protection devices (SPDs), and the associated earthing system components. We can provide design assistance, risk assessment per IEC 62305-2, and complete Bill of Materials for your project.
What is the protection radius of your ESE Lightning Arrester?
The protection radius of an ESE arrester varies with the installation height of the device, its advance time (ΔT), and the selected protection level (I, II, III, or IV) per NFC 17-102. For typical industrial installations at 6–10 m above the protected structure, our ESE arresters provide protection radii ranging from 40 m to over 100 m depending on the model and configuration. Contact our technical team with your site dimensions and we will perform a protection radius calculation for you at no charge.
What lightning protection standards apply in India?
The primary standards applicable for lightning protection systems in India are:
- IS 2309 — Indian standard for protection of buildings and allied structures against lightning
- IEC 62305 — International standard for lightning protection (Parts 1–4), widely adopted in India for industrial and infrastructure projects
- NFC 17-102 — French standard governing ESE (Early Streamer Emission) lightning arresters, used for ESE system design
Konnark designs and supplies systems conforming to all three standards depending on project specifications.
Is lightning protection mandatory for hospitals and schools?
Hospitals, schools, and other public-occupancy buildings typically fall under mandatory or strongly recommended lightning protection requirements based on their risk classification under IEC 62305-2 and IS 2309. Both structure height and occupancy risk are factored into the risk assessment. For hospitals in particular, an LPS is essential — both to protect the structure and to safeguard sensitive life-critical medical equipment from lightning-induced surges. Konnark can assist with risk assessments and system design for healthcare and educational facilities.
What lightning protection is recommended for a large warehouse or factory shed?
For large-footprint single-storey structures such as warehouses and factory sheds, an ESE Lightning Arrester installed at the ridge or on a mast above the roof is typically the most economical and effective solution. A single ESE unit can protect a large area — reducing the number of air terminals, down conductors, and earthing pits needed compared to a conventional Franklin rod mesh system. The installation must be connected via dedicated down conductors to a copper bonded chemical earthing system to safely dissipate the lightning current.

No. Konnark does not manufacture solar panels. We are a supplier of Solar PV Modules — sourcing and supplying high-quality modules from established manufacturers for rooftop and utility-scale projects across India. Our primary manufacturing activity covers earthing products and lightning protection products.
What is the difference between DCR and Non-DCR Solar Modules?
DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) modules are manufactured using solar cells produced in India, making them eligible for government schemes such as PM Surya Ghar, the National Solar Mission, and state government tenders that mandate the use of Indian-made components. Non-DCR modules may use cells sourced globally, typically offering more flexibility in specifications and pricing, and are widely used in commercial and industrial solar projects without government subsidy requirements. If your project requires MNRE or DISCOM approval with DCR compliance, please specify this when requesting a quotation.
What are the benefits of N-Type Solar Modules over P-Type?
N-Type solar modules offer several advantages over conventional P-Type PERC modules:
- Higher efficiency — N-Type TOPCon and HJT cells achieve 22–25% module efficiency versus 20–21.5% for PERC
- Lower temperature coefficient — better power output in high-temperature Indian conditions
- Negligible LID (Light-Induced Degradation) — maintains output more consistently over the first years of operation
- Better low-light performance — generates more energy on hazy or cloudy days
- Lower annual degradation rate — typically 0.4% per year versus 0.5–0.55% for PERC
For solar projects with premium land costs or high energy yield targets, N-Type modules offer a compelling total-lifetime return.
Do your solar modules come with product and performance warranty?
Yes. Our solar PV modules are backed by a 12-year product workmanship warranty and a 25–30 year linear power output warranty depending on the module series. Power output warranties guarantee that the module will retain at least 80–87% of its rated power at the end of the warranty period, subject to standard degradation rates. Full warranty terms are provided with each product data sheet and order documentation.
Do you supply solar modules for rooftop as well as utility-scale projects?
Yes. We cater to residential rooftop (1–10 kWp), commercial and industrial rooftop (10 kWp – 1 MWp), and utility-scale ground-mount solar plants (1 MWp and above). Our technical team can advise on module selection, earthing requirements, and lightning protection design for any project scale. Bulk pricing and staggered delivery schedules are available for large projects.
What earthing is required for a rooftop solar installation?
Rooftop solar installations require earthing of the module mounting structures, inverter chassis, and DC array negative conductor (for ungrounded systems, per CEA and IEC 62548 requirements). A dedicated copper bonded or chemical earthing electrode should be installed with earth resistance not exceeding 5 Ω. The earthing conductor must be sized for fault current capacity. Konnark supplies electrodes, backfill compound, and earthing accessories specifically suited for rooftop solar EPC projects.
Does a solar power plant need lightning protection?
Yes. Ground-mount and large rooftop solar plants are particularly vulnerable to lightning because the array structures are often the tallest objects in open-field environments. A well-designed lightning protection system (LPS) is essential to protect the inverters, junction boxes, transformers, and module strings from direct strikes and induced surges. Konnark supplies ESE lightning arresters, conventional LPS components, and surge protection devices (SPDs) suitable for solar power plant protection, conforming to IEC 62305 and IEC 61643.
What is surge protection and is it needed for solar plants?
Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) protect sensitive electronics from transient overvoltages caused by nearby lightning strikes, switching events, or utility disturbances. For solar plants, SPDs conforming to IEC 61643 are recommended on both the DC string side (at combiner boxes) and the AC inverter output side. SPDs work in conjunction with the structural lightning protection system — they cannot replace it. Konnark can advise on SPD selection and coordination as part of a complete solar protection package.
